What Is Truly Lost In Our NationThe 2016 Presidential election was the first election I have paid attention to. I admit, the political landscape is vast and there is much I have yet to learn. However, I do recognize something forgotten on both the left and right sides of the aisle, truth. Right now there is a strong divide in the United States. I don't see it as racism or sexism; rather, what we define truth as being.
We accept truth as being fact, but a lot of people like to bend the truth and only claim what fits their prerogative. This is why we have such separation in politics today. What a Democrat may see as an irrefutable fact, a Republican may see as a lie or deception from what the real facts are, and vice versa. This leads more into the real question rarely asked: why is it so difficult to accept truth? Our country, and its people, is more accepting now than ever before. Whether it’s race, religion, or sexual orientation, we have become more inclusive right now than ever in our nation’s history. Since becoming more inclusive and accepting, it seems like our duty to not offend anyone. Even I strive to refrain from calling people out for being incorrect, in an attempt not to offend them. But have you thought about what the biggest offence is? Finding out you are wrong. Being wrong stings, doesn’t it? After fighting for and/or believing in a cause for years, coming to the realization you may have it wrong just hurts. It hurts your pride, judgement, and thoughts. But, here’s where the problems arise. Instead of confronting your ignorance or faults, you struggle to defend your beliefs in an effort to protect your ego. And instead of putting your ideas and philosophy on the front-lines, you block out the opinions of others and, in some cases, the truth. So, here is where I challenge you to find the truth. I challenge you listen to the opinions of others and test those of your own. I have failed repeatedly on realizing when I am wrong, but I make it my endeavor to fix my faults, keep a level head, and find and defend the truth. If we do not obligate ourselves to fixing this problem in ourselves and our nation, I can only imagine how deeper the divide will be. Because if feelings and emotions belittle truth, the path to wisdom is all but clouded.
